Peninsula Park’s rose garden sits below street level in a formal, symmetrical layout — the oldest public rose garden in Portland, older than the one most tourists drive across town for. Between May and October the beds are full and the air smells like it. There’s a bandstand at the center, wide gravel paths, and enough bench seating that you’re not fighting anyone for a spot to sit. Bring coffee from Piedmont and make it a morning stop before the day heats up, or go right before sunset when the light does something to the color of the roses that photos undersell. Outside bloom season it’s still a good quiet walk — the park has a pool, tennis courts, and a playground if you’ve got kids who need to run before a long car ride.
